The carnival is the name of the period from Epiphany (January 6) to Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent). It is traditionally characterized by merry feasts, balls, fun and folk festivals. In the Christian liturgical calendar, there is no significant religious holiday associated with it. It is basically based on rich folk traditions. The highlights of this period are the last three days, the actual carnival. These days are also a winter farewell. Famous carnivals, such as the Rio Carnival and Venetian Carnival, take place at this time.
